Cerebral Air Embolism Following Thyroid Biopsy

چکیده
Background: Cerebral air embolism is defined as symptoms and signs after occlusion of cerebral arteries by intracerebral air bubble influx. There have been reports of many cases during an invasive procedure. Herein, we report a case of air embolism after thyroid biopsy. Case Report: A 70-year-old female visited our emergency room with right hemiparesis and global aphasia after thyroid biopsy. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging revealed cerebral air embolism in the left hemisphere, and neck CT revealed air embolism in the left lower lateral neck and mediastinum. She was diagnosed with cerebral air embolism following thyroid biopsy and was treated with high-flow oxygen supply. Conclusion: Our case showed a good outcome with brain imaging and clinical symptoms due to immediate diagnosis of cerebral air embolism and adequate treatment with high-flow oxygen therapy in a patient who had presented with neurologic symptoms directly after thyroid biopsy. Systemic Air Embolism Following Diagnostic Bronchoscopy
A 51-year-old man was admitted to have a nodule evaluated using chest computed tomography (CT). Shortly after curetting and transbronchial biopsies via bronchoscopy, hypotension, bradycardia, unconsciousness, and left hemiplegia appeared and resolved within one hour. Head CT showed cerebral air embolism. The following day, lower left quadrant pain developed. Pneumatosis intestinalis on abdomina...
متن کاملCerebral air embolism following transbronchial lung biopsy during flexible bronchoscopy
During a diagnostic flexible bronchoscopy an 84 year old patient suffered a sudden reduction in conscious level following a transbronchial lung biopsy. A subsequent computed tomography brain scan confirmed cerebral air emboli. The patient survived following a period of supportive treatment in the critical care unit. Transbronchial lung biopsy may cause disruption of vessels walls within the lun...
متن کاملBeware of positive pressure: coronary artery air embolism following percutaneous lung biopsy
Patients undergoing percutaneous lung biopsy are at risk of developing a systemic air embolism. Air embolism may manifest as a catastrophic iatrogenic event with ischemic insult to the end organs, with sites of least resistance such as coronary and cerebral circulation the most susceptible. We review the available literature and present a case of iatrogenic air embolism during computed tomograp...
متن کاملFour Cases of a Cerebral Air Embolism Complicating a Percutaneous Transthoracic Needle Biopsy
A percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy is a common procedure in the practice of pulmonology. An air embolism is a rare but potentially fatal complication of a percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy. We report four cases of a cerebral air embolism that developed after a percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy. Early diagnosis and the rapid application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the m...
متن کاملFatal cerebral air embolism following uneventful flexible bronchoscopy.
Flexible bronchoscopy is a widely used and safe procedure with a reported maximal mortality rate of 0.04% and a major-complications rate of 0.5%. There are, however, only few case descriptions for postinterventional cerebral air embolism and the frequency of this supposedly rare complication is unknown. The current study presents 2 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who suffered fatal cer...
